Finding His Strength

Sometimes, the signs that a child is hurting are not immediately visible. They may look like anger, withdrawal, frustration, or a child saying things about himself that no parent ever wants to hear.

For one young man, these changes led to the discovery that he had been sexually abused. ✂️ He came to the Tree House for a forensic interview, where he had the opportunity to tell his story in a safe, supportive environment. Because he also had concerns about his body, he was referred for a visit with the Tree House medical team.

But his needs went beyond that initial interview and examination. Though mild-mannered on the outside, he was struggling with internal anger and increasingly negative thoughts and beliefs about himself. Through specialized trauma-focused therapy, he began learning that his feelings were real, that what happened to him was not his fault, and that he had a voice in his own healing.

Week by week, he made progress. He learned to identify and express his emotions. He learned to advocate for what he needed. He worked through the trauma he had experienced and developed healthier ways to cope with difficult feelings.

He also found the courage to participate in court proceedings related to his abuse.

By the end of his therapy treatment, he had developed greater confidence in himself and the ability to face difficult experiences without allowing them to define him.

His story reminds us that healing can begin when a child finally has a safe place to be heard, and supportive people beside him to help him move forward. ✂️

Perhaps most importantly, he eventually reached a place where he could share his story with both of his parents. Their response was exactly what every child deserves: love, understanding, and unwavering support.

At the Tree House, we know that a forensic interview is only the beginning. Children need medical care, advocacy, therapy, and people who will continue walking beside them long after they leave our doors. Because of the generosity of our community, children like him don't have to face that journey alone.

Finding Her Voice

When a child comes to the Tree House following a report of sexual abuse, the first priority is to help that child feel safe. For one young girl, that first visit became the beginning of a remarkable journey toward healing, stability, and finding her voice again.

At the Tree House, during a specialized examination with our Board-Certified Child Abuse Pediatrician and Community Health Nurse, she shared new information about her abuse. She then participated in a forensic interview, where she felt safe enough to share important new details about what had happened to her. That disclosure helped investigators move forward.

From there, her life began to change dramatically for the better. She moved into the care of a new family and faced the difficult transition of adjusting to a new home while beginning to process experiences no child should have to endure. The Tree House remained with her and her new caregivers throughout that transition. Through Transitional Trauma Therapy (T3), Family Advocacy, and ongoing mental health services, she and her caregivers received the support they needed to navigate an uncertain new chapter.

Healing did not happen overnight. But over time, she learned to understand and manage the impact of her trauma. She found ways to cope, regain a sense of safety, and move forward.

By the end of the school year ✂️, she had made such significant progress that she graduated from trauma therapy with dramatically reduced symptoms. She also found the courage and strength to testify in court. ✂️

Her story is a reminder of what is possible when a child is believed, protected, and surrounded by people who refuse to give up on her. At the Tree House, our work is about more than responding to abuse. It is about helping children reclaim their childhoods, and giving them the tools and support to build a future beyond what happened to them.
